U-Pick and Farm Activities 2018 Guide

— Written By and last updated by

Looking for summer family activities? Many local farms offer U-Pick opportunities and farm stands as well as farm tours, children’s activities, playgrounds and picnic areas within an hour’s drive of Hickory. For many of the U-pick operations, because nature is unpredictable, it is advised to call ahead to check crop availability, field conditions and amenities. Generally blueberry season will begin mid- June followed by blackberries and raspberries. To make the most of your visit and to keep your family comfortable be sure to bring along sunscreen, hats, water and snacks. If you plan on staying a bit or not going directly home, a cooler can help keep your highly perishable berries fresh. Freezing your berries for future recipes is very easy to do. Remove stems and debris, wash, drain and pack into 1- gallon re-sealable freezer bags or containers. To keep the berries from sticking together you can freeze them on cookie sheets first and then pack. You can also save time by freezing recipe ready portions with sweetener included. Be sure to follow farms on facebook to keep up with crop updates and special events.
