In February, we generally think about ways to love and care for people, but have you ever stopped to consider that could include pets too? February 20 is nationally celebrated as National Love Your Pet Day where pet owners everywhere spend a little extra time caring for their pets. Whether it be dogs, cats, birds, horses, or even fish, pets can make a happy addition in any family’s life. Pets have the ability to lower a person’s blood pressure, lower the risk of heart attack, alleviate depression, and provide more opportunities for exercise. When young people look after their pets, they can gain more responsibility as an adult. Some ways to care for your pets include making sure they are healthy by taking them to the vet when needed, eat healthy foods, and exercise often. It’s important to show them, love, by spending time with them and playing with them.

In 4-H, we have several project books available that instruct youth on how to care for various animals and learn more about them. They include information about the animal and how to care for the pet. Did you know that Union County has the largest horse population in the state based on inventory numbers? It’s true. We also have several horse clubs and a new dog husbandry club in the county. They offer monthly educational and practical meetings to families who have an interest in these animals. If you want to get involved with a club, visit us online at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Union County Center website under Union County 4-H Youth Development.

For those youth who may be interested in learning more about taking care of animals or learning more about animals in general, consider signing them up for our Animal Adventures summer camp this July for youth ages 10-14. Registration for our Summer Fun program opens in just a few weeks!
