NEW! You can now read the most recent FDA recalls from our website!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for regulating animal food. Animal food recalls are announced by the FDA and it is important for the industry to be aware of recalls that impact the type of food they process.

Where Can I Find FDA Recall Information?

There are three ways to keep up with the latest FDA recall information:

Thanks to our amazing Extension IT team, you can now access the latest FDA food safety recalls directly from our homepage. As recalls are announced, they will appear alongside other Extension news on the Feed Milling website. The feed is limited to the five (5) most recent recalls, so be sure to check the site often for updates!

If you’d like to have FDA recall information delivered directly to your inbox, subscribe to their email updates and follow the prompts to select your subscription preferences.

Note: The FDA does not separate human and animal food recalls within their email subscriptions. To subscribe, select “Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts” under the Recalls and Safety Alerts category.

Recall information can also be found on the FDA Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts page. For animal food and other animal-related recalls, filter the product type by “Animal & Veterinary”.

Recalls and Food Safety Education

The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 (FSMA) requires animal food processors to have a written food safety plan prepared by a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual. It is the  (PCQI) responsibility of the PCQI to keep up with changes in food safety knowledge, including recalls impacting animal food.

As food safety knowledge and experience evolves, new hazards associated with the types of animal food being prepared should be added to the food safety plan hazard analysis to determine whether or not additional preventive controls are necessary to mitigate this hazard.
