The Swain County Agricultural Fair is still several months away (August 19), but the Fair Committee is working hard discussing ideas and finalizing details. Not only are the days leading up to the fair busy with fair day specifics, but right now as we get the word out about this year’s 2023 fair. There are various components that have to come together to make the day a success. More specifically in planning related to scheduling entertainment, deciding layout and logistics, securing food trucks, organizing craft vendors and promoting special events.

For example, coming up on May 6 a Spring Craft and More Fling will be held at the Great Smoky Mountains Event Park (formerly Inspiration Park). This first annual special event, hosted by the Swain County Agricultural Fair, is a one day market (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) offering a wide variety of handcrafted items such as home decor, art, handmade jewelry, traditional crafts, home-canned foods, boutique clothing, housewares, antiques, food trucks and much more!! Admission and parking is free. All vendor booth fees will go to support this year’s fair.

Battle of the Bands #1 no AcousticAnother special event that the fair committee has recently announced is Battle of the Bands, a four-hour music contest set to take place the day of the fair beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Battle of the Bands will feature six bands who are finalists competing for prize money. Entries are currently being accepted in the following music genres: Country, Bluegrass, Gospel, Americana. The top 3 bands will be awarded prize money:  First Place – $1,500, Second Place – $1,000, Third Place – $500.

More information about contest rules and judging criteria can be found at: swainfair.org.

Fair entries / ag exhibitsEverything you will see at the Swain County Agricultural Fair has been in the works since the previous year’s fair. The ten person committee made up of staff from the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Swain County Center, Swain County Soil and Water, along with community volunteers meet monthly to discuss what needs to happen next. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes during these meetings and sometimes daily or weekly depending on the stage of the planning process. The end result is what you’ll see on August 19.

What can you expect to see? Live music, Appalachian-style clogging, food trucks and craft vendors, youth livestock shows and activities for kids. Also, prize winning entries in agricultural produce, home canned and baked goods, 4-H arts and crafts, and more.

Entrance fee to the Swain County Agricultural Fair is $5 per car load, which includes Battle of the Bands along with all the festivities, food and entertainment you can stand.
