Landscape Professionals Day

Join the Catawba County Cooperative Extension and Killian’s Hardware for a full day of industry education, networking, and pest management updates.

This comprehensive workshop brings together leading experts from NC State University and the Cooperative Extension to cover critical topics ranging from disease management and emerging pests to operational efficiency in the landscape.

  • 7:30 – 8:00 a.m.: Check-in
  • 8:00 – 8:30 a.m.: Welcome (Sharon, Managers)
  • 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.: Sam Marshall – North Carolina Cooperative Extension Area Agent, “Emerging Insect Pests in Nursery Crops and Ornamental Landscapes”
  • 9:30 – 10:00 a.m.: Morning Break / Vendor Time
  • 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.: Dr. Sara Villani – Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist – Fruit and Ornamental Pathology, “Navigating Fungicide Resistance, FRAC groups, and Efficacy for Disease Management in Woody Ornamentals”
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Dr. Raymond McCauley – NCSU Turfgrass Extension, “Managing Spring and Summer Turfgrass Pests in the Landscape”
  • 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.: LUNCH
  • 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.: Patrick Anderson – Rainbow Ecoscience, “Liquid Labor: Using Plant Growth Regulators and Herbicides for Efficient Operations”
  • 2:00 – 2:30 p.m.: Afternoon Break
  • 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.: Patricia Alder – NCSU Entomology and Plant Pathology, “Mosquito Control for Landscape Professionals”
  • 3:30 p.m.: Closing Remarks, License Scan

The day kicks off with check-in at 7:30 a.m., followed by welcome remarks at 8:00 a.m.. Lunch will be provided from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., and there will be dedicated time to visit with vendors during the morning break.

Our featured sessions include:

  • Emerging Insect Pests: Sam Marshall (N.C. Cooperative Extension) will discuss emerging insect pests affecting nursery crops and ornamental landscapes.

  • Disease Management & Fungicides: Dr. Sara Villani (NC State) will guide professionals through navigating fungicide resistance, FRAC groups, and efficacy for woody ornamentals.

  • Turfgrass Management: Dr. Raymond McCauley (NCSU Turfgrass Extension) will present strategies for managing spring and summer turfgrass pests.

  • Operational Efficiency: Patrick Anderson (Rainbow Ecoscience) will present “Liquid Labor,” focusing on using plant growth regulators and herbicides to improve operations.

  • Mosquito Control: Patricia Alder (NC State Entomology and Plant Pathology) will close the educational sessions with a guide to mosquito control for landscape professionals.

NCDA&CS Pesticide Credits Available: Attendees will have the opportunity to earn the following credits upon completion of the course and license scan at 3:30 p.m.:

  • L (Ornamental & Turf): 5 credits

  • O (Ag. Pest – Plant): 2 credits

  • B (Public Health): 1 credit

  • N (Demonstration & Research): 1 credit

  • D (Dealer): 1 credit

  • X (Private Safety): 1 credit
