The Youth Council is offered by Catawba County Government and Cooperative Extension to bring a youth perspective to local government and bring together youth leaders from across the county.

Catawba County Youth Council delegates recently attended the Youth Legislative Assembly in Raleigh. Delegates were  Madison Alicardi and Matthew Fleming from Fred T. Foard High School and Carmen Silva from Newton-Conover High School. They were accompanied by Donna Mull, Catawba County Youth Council Advisor, with Cooperative Extension.

The Youth Legislative Assembly is an annual conference offered by the Governor’s Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office. The Assembly provides high school students the opportunity to learn about the legislative process as they work in committees to draft, debate and vote on mock bills. The conference provides a setting for teens to express their opinions on issues effecting local, state, and national governments.

Youth Legislative delegates served on the following committees, simulating  NC legislative committees, including Education, Civil Rights, Children and Family, Environment, Health Affairs, Human Sexuality, Judiciary, Science and Technology. Substance Abuse, and Youth Affairs, The final bills are shared with NC legislators. Peer selected Tri-Speakers and committee chairs provide leadership for the conference.

The Catawba County Youth Council is a commissioner appointed youth committee with representatives from each high school as well as selected community organizations. The Council meets monthly and youth learn about and work on local issues while improving their leadership and citizenship skills. During the 2014-15 school -year, the Council had a goal of positively attributing time, offering educational programs to positive impact Catawba County teens.
