Purpose/Objectives:

For youth to apply research, communication, and problem-solving skills toward personal and community health promotion.

Each participant will be able to:

  • Select a health topic and explain why you choose that topic.
  • Research the topic.
  • Identify the cause(s) of the health problem.
  • Illustrate how to prevent the problem.
  • Discuss a program or intervention to prevent or reduce the problem (required for Senior Division youth only.

Eligibility:

Individuals or teams may compete. Each county may enter up to two participants in each age division.

  • 8-10 – 4-H’er must be 8 years old before January 1 of the current year and not have reached their eleventh birthday before January 1 of the current year.
  • 11-13 – 4-H’er must be eleven years old before January 1 of the current year and not have reached their thirteenth birthday before January 1 of the current year.
  • 14-18 – 4-H’er must be fourteen years of age before January 1 of the current year and not reached their nineteenth birthday before January 1 of the current year. Eligibility: Individuals or teams may compete.

Suggestions/Helpful Hints:

  1. The presentation will be evaluated based on the extent to which the youth meet the presentation objectives. Judges will ask questions and complete the standard score sheet.
  2. The presentation’s content and format must reflect the age and understanding of the youth making the presentation.
  3. Presentations must be factual and research-based information, not personal opinions, value judgments, or ethical/moral positions that are more suited for the Public Speaking program. Ask a health care professional to review the information for accuracy  – for controversial issues, present research facts to support both sides of the argument.
  4. Since some topics may be sensitive or uncomfortable to some audience members, the youth should announce the topic and specific emphasis at the beginning of the presentation. Allow time to leave for individuals who desire to do so.
