The North Carolina Cattlemen’s Association has scheduled a referendum for October 30, 2024, to decide on continuing the North Carolina Cattle Industry Assessment. This assessment proposes a one-dollar fee per head of cattle sold in the state, aimed at advancing various aspects of the cattle and dairy industries.
Funds would support youth programs, research, education, promotion efforts, and issues management. The referendum, if passed, will maintain the assessment established since 1957, with provisions for refunds and recurring referendums every six years upon request.
Voting will be conducted at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Catawba County Center on October 30, 2024.

Vote at your county’s Extension office or by absentee ballot.
- October 1, 2024: Absentee Ballot Collections Begin
- October 30, 2024: Voting Day
The referendum would continue the original state assessment program, which was first established in 1957 and reinstated in 2010. The assessment is currently at work in the following program areas:
- Producer Education: Saving time and money with current knowledge gained from research, the assessment helps us produce better beef.
- Issues Management: We have an engaged presence at the N.C. General Assembly that ensures our voice is a part of the conversation in policy matters.
- Youth: From judging contests, quiz bowl, leadership development, and more, the assessment has proudly supported NC 4-H Youth Livestock programming.
- Research: Invaluable knowledge gained through research has helped cattle farmers’ bottom line, making it easier to pass down farms to the next generation.
- Beef Promotion: Through a variety of events and targeted advertising, beef has been the choice protein for consumers.
*Anyone who owns cattle and is at least 18 years of age is eligible to vote. Must turn 18 by October 30, 2024
