January 22- Vermicomposting- Kim Fox


Register

Learn about setting up a worm bin or other small vermicompost operations. Unlike regular composting which uses heat and heat tolerant microbes to break down organic waste, vermicomposting uses red wiggler worms (Eisenia fetida) to break downs wastes through digestion. Research has shown that the vermicompost from this process has a beneficial effect on plant growth and soil health. Kim Fox was a consultant for Inch-by-Inch Worm Castings, sold worm composting systems and conducted workshops in Tucson AZ. She attended the 2017 International vermaculture conference.

March 26-An Overview of Canning- Donna Mull


Get organized and ready to can for when garden produce starts coming in. NC State Family and Consumer Science Agent Donna Mull will give an overview of different types of canning, problems to watch out for and how to can safely.


April 23-IPPM (Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management) in Vegetables- April Vigardt N.C. Cooperative Extension


Learn techniques to manage weeds, pests and diseases in your vegetable garden while not harming pollinators. IPPM is a multi-layered approach to make use of landscape diversity, cultural, mechanical and biological controls before using chemical controls.


May 28- Making Fruit Water Kefer and Shrubs (both lightly fermented drinks)- Susan Faust and Marty Hughes.


June 25- Fermentation with Brett Taubmann  Price TBD


Brett Taubman, App State Professor of Fermentation Science  will lead us in a hands on fermentation workshop. Brett is the author of Southern Culture on the Fizz and has years of experience with many different types of fermentation. We will be utilizing local produce.

August 27- Preserving Foods with Dehydration- Donna Mull

Learn how to safely preserve produce using dehydration while maintaining flavor and color. If you don't have freezer space and don't want to can, dehydration can save you space and your harvest.

Sept. 24- Sweet Potato Fly and Ginger Bugs - Healthy femented drinks- Jennifer O'Donnell and Marty Hughes
